bebop (1973)

Sarah Vaughan, vocal
Carl Schroeder, piano

The musical space in this performance once again shows the tradition of call-and-response but on a very sophisticated level. The piano fills whenever a vocal phrase ends or holds on a long sustained note. Vaughan and the pianist anticipate each others every move. This selection is a showcase for Vaughans extraordinary ability to expressively stylize a song. Notice the changes in timbre, volume, and range. It is this flexibility that gave her such a hypnotic power over her audiences, especially when interpreting ballads.
